The final act

For some time we’ve been wondering how we should end this incredible journey. We weighed up all sorts of ideas and options, but only one thing seemed right: we both felt the need to give something back to the people and places that have made our trip so extraordinary.

Therefore, we’re going back to Guatemala! We fly tomorrow.

We’ve been accepted to work as volunteers at Camino Seguro/Safe Passage (CS), a non-profit organisation in Guatemala whose mission and work appeals to us both. We discovered CS back in March during our time in Antigua and mentioned their work in this blog post.

Our work commitment is five weeks, starting early November. Although we don’t have specific details on our roles as yet, Fiona expects to be working within the organisation’s educational programs whilst Matt will help in the administrative and logistical areas of the organisation.

It was difficult to find an organisation that can meaningfully use the different skill sets of two individuals, so we were thrilled to be accepted by CS. The opportunity to live in one of our most favourite cities of the trip is an added bonus :-).

So as one adventure ends, another begins! We look forward to sharing more stories with you in the coming weeks.

  1. We have trouble finding words to express our emotions and leave an appropriate comment – other than ‘Well done, Fi and Matt – looking forward to seeing you – and the slide night’

    • We had trouble finding the words to express our emotions too Judy! We’ll bring all 40,000 odd photos with us to Christmas. Hope there will be enough bubbles to last the show! 😉 (Fiona & Matt)

  2. Hi Fiona / Matt. Congratulations on nearly completing your epic Odyssey. What an excellent way to mark the last weeks of your amazing trip – good on you both – I hope it provides for several more really rewarding and truly memorable weeks.
Rose, Ellis & I are really looking forward to seeing you once you are back in Oz.
    All the best, Garry x

    • Thanks for your comments Garry. Looking forward to a trip to Melbourne to see you all. We might have to make it around Halloween just to see Ellis’ outfit! Cheers, Fiona and Matt.
