Losing your driver’s licence on an overseas road trip

AKA: What the hell does an Honorary Consul do anyway?

Antigua, Guatemala is famous for its spectacular religious processions in the weeks leading up to Santa Semana (Easter). We were fortunate enough to be there for one of these, along with the many other local and international tourists it attracts. The spectacle also lures gangs of pick-pockets making the most of the riches on offer. Continue reading

Rifles, ruins and rebels: Honduras and El Salvador

banner-copan

Mention that you’re going to Honduras and you’ll receive a tirade of warnings: it’s not safe, never go out alone, don’t trust anyone. We took extra precautions here but the main evidence of any security issue was the abundance of armed guards protecting everything from ATMs to the local Chinese restaurant. They were more active opening doors for people than firing their rifles, thankfully. Continue reading

Nicaragua and a tale of two cities

banner-Nicaragua

Having both lived most of our lives in Sydney, we are all too aware of the rivalry that has existed between Sydney and Melbourne, Australia’s two largest cities. The residents of each regularly engage in a game of one-upmanship and argue over who has the best weather, coffee, beaches, restaurants or football code. Continue reading

Eyes on the Prize – Spotting Wildlife in Costa Rica

banner_CostaRica

We were told that Costa Rica is all about nature; but with 26% of its land protected as national parks and reserves, it was difficult to pick exactly where to go.

Crossing Over

banner-panama

Panama represents a crossroads for many but consider the irony: you cannot cross between North and South America on land, yet ships can pass between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through land. How can this be? Continue reading

Reflections on South America

banner-Cartegena

After nearly a year on the road, we finally reached our half way point in Cartagena – our last destination in Colombia and in all of South America. There is no road from here north and other than fly, our only way to Panama was by boat. Once we loaded our bikes and had a farewell toast, we reflected on our year in South America. Here are some of my thoughts: Continue reading

Discovering El Dorado

banner_bogota

The European quest for the legendary El Dorado prompted the exploration of the furthest reaches of the New World, including the first known navigation of the Amazon River. Luckily for us, we just had to pop into the Museo del Oro (Gold Museum) in Bogotá to find it. Continue reading

Rightfully Proud

banner_medellin

Whoever came up with Colombia’s tourism slogan: “The only danger is wanting to stay” was bang on. We’ve found three different towns in which we could happily while away the rest of our days, the only country to make us feel this way in South America Continue reading
