One of the local crops farmed in this region is the coca leaf. Locals use the coca leaf to chew, and to make tea. It is also used in the manufacture of cocaine. Bolvia’s president, Evo Morales, was once a coca farmer himself. He has sought to protect the rights of farmers involved in the legal production of the coca leaf whilst cracking down on cocaine production and smuggling. Coca leaf is still used to flavour Coca Cola (cocaine was once a key ingredient of the drink).
